What is the Preeti to Unicode converter?
Preeti (प्रीति) is the old Nepali font most offices, typing institutes and Lok Sewa typing tests have used for decades. It is not real Nepali text: it draws Devanagari shapes on top of English keys, so g]kfn only looks like नेपाल while the Preeti font is selected. Open that file on a phone, paste it into Facebook or type it into the PSC online application and you see English gibberish. Unicode (युनिकोड) is the international standard that every phone, browser and government website understands. This tool converts between the two in both directions, entirely in your browser.
How to convert Preeti to Unicode
- Select Preeti → Unicode above.
- Copy your Preeti text from Word, Excel or a PDF. It is fine if it looks like English letters (for example nf]s ;]jf) – that is exactly what the converter needs.
- Paste it in the input box. The Unicode Nepali appears on the right as you type.
- Click Copy and paste the result anywhere – email, Google Docs, the PSC form, social media.
The converter does more than swap letters. Preeti stores some letters in visual order, so a simple letter-for-letter table produces broken words. This tool fixes them:
- इ-kar (ि): in Preeti you type l before the consonant (ls = कि). Unicode stores it after the whole cluster, including half letters, so l:ylt becomes स्थिति, not a broken form.
- Reph (र्): the curl above a letter is typed after its syllable with {. The converter moves it in front, so sfo{qmd becomes कार्यक्रम and ug'{k5{ becomes गर्नुपर्छ.
- Half letters and conjuncts: क्ष, त्र, ज्ञ, श्र, द्ध, द्व, द्य, ट्ट, ड्ड, ङ्ग and the rest, including half letter + ा forms such as If = क्ष and 0f = ण.
- Vowel signs built from pieces: f] = ो, f} = ौ, cf = आ, and chandrabindu/anusvara placed correctly (आँखा, संविधान).
- Nepali digits and punctuation: Shift + number keys become १२३, the full stop key becomes । and = becomes a normal full stop.
How to convert Unicode to Preeti
Choose Unicode → Preeti, paste Nepali Unicode text and copy the result. The output looks like random Latin letters on this page – that is correct. Paste it into Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint or PageMaker and change the font to Preeti; the Nepali appears. This is useful when an office template, newsletter or certificate design still uses Preeti, or when you want to check how a Unicode passage is typed on the Preeti keyboard before a typing test.
Latin numbers are written as Nepali numerals because the Preeti font draws 1 as ज्ञ. English words are left unchanged, so convert Nepali passages only.

Preeti vs Unicode: which should I use for Lok Sewa?
For anything online – the PSC online application, emails, social media, Google Docs – always use Unicode. Preeti text pasted into a web form is stored as English letters and will be unreadable to whoever opens it. Many candidates still learned typing on Preeti, and some computer-skill tests and offices use it, so it is worth knowing both. Common mistakes and tips
- Copying from a PDF changes characters. Some PDFs replace Preeti's special glyphs (§ å ¿ «) with other symbols. If one word looks wrong, retype it or copy from the original Word file.
- Mixed fonts in one document. If a Word file has English headings in Times New Roman and Nepali in Preeti, convert only the Nepali parts – English words would otherwise be read as Preeti keys.
- Kantipur, Sagarmatha and other fonts use different layouts. This converter is for Preeti (and Preeti-compatible fonts); text typed in other legacy fonts will convert incorrectly.
- Spelling is not changed. The converter keeps what was typed. A Preeti typo such as ? (रु) instead of ¿ (रू) stays a typo in Unicode.
