Lok Sewa age limit (लोकसेवा उमेर हद) at a glance
For Federal civil service posts filled through the Public Service Commission (लोक सेवा आयोग), the age limits come from section 10 of the Civil Service Act, 2049 (निजामती सेवा ऐन, २०४९). The Act lists who cannot be a candidate: anyone who has not completed 18 years (non-gazetted posts) or 21 years (gazetted posts), and men who have completed 35 years or women who have completed 40 years.
| Post level | Minimum | Maximum – men | Maximum – women / persons with disabilities |
|---|---|---|---|
| Non-gazetted (Kharidar, Nayab Subba…) | 18 completed | below 35 | below 40 |
| Gazetted 3rd class (Section Officer…) | 21 completed | below 35 | below 40 |
| Gazetted 2nd / 1st class open competition | 21 completed | up to 45 (all candidates) | |
Exceptions written in the Act
- Persons with disabilities (as prescribed under section 7(8)) can be candidates up to 40 years.
- Ex-army or ex-police can apply up to 40 years, but only for the civil-service posts the government has designated for them.
- Permanent serving civil servants (स्थायी बहालवाला कर्मचारी) have no upper age limit.
- Women who have served continuously for at least five years on temporary appointment in a government development project have no age bar for open competition (section 10(2)).
Other services set their own rules: Nepal Police, Nepal Army, Armed Police, the Teacher Service Commission, provincial public service commissions and public corporations publish their own limits. Use the Custom option and copy the numbers from the advertisement.
Age is counted on the last date of application
Your age is not counted on the exam day or the day you fill the form. PSC advertisements state the cut-off date explicitly. For example, PSC notice no. 38/083-84 (published 2083/04/06) says candidates must have completed 18 years and not crossed 35 years (40 for women and persons with disabilities) as of 2083/04/26 – the normal last date of application – even though applications with double fee were accepted until 2083/05/02. So enter the normal deadline (दरखास्त दिने अन्तिम मिति) in the calculator, not the double-fee date. You can find deadlines for current advertisements on our Lok Sewa calendar.
What does “३५ वर्ष ननाघेको” mean exactly?
Advertisements say “१८ वर्ष उमेर पूरा भई ३५ वर्ष ननाघेको”. The Act itself disqualifies a man who has completed 35 years (पैंतीस वर्ष उमेर पूरा भइसकेका). In practice this means your 35th birthday must fall after the last date of application. This calculator follows that reading: if you complete 35 on the deadline day itself, it shows “not eligible”. When you are within a few days of a limit the tool shows a warning – confirm with the Commission before paying the fee.
How to calculate your age in BS (उमेर हिसाब)
Subtract your birth date from the counting date in the Bikram Sambat calendar – years, then months, then days, borrowing the real number of days of the previous BS month when needed. Example: born 2048/07/16 BS, last date of application 2083/07/15 BS → age 34 years 11 months 30 days, so a male candidate is still eligible. Someone born one day earlier (2048/07/15) completes 35 exactly on the deadline and is not eligible.
Because BS months have 29 to 32 days that change every year, counting with “30 days a month” or converting through AD can put you a day off. The calculator uses the actual month lengths. If you only know your AD birthday, use the AD toggle or the Nepali date converter – but the BS date of birth on your citizenship is what the Commission checks.
Last birth date that qualifies
The result panel shows the window of birth dates that are eligible for the counting date you entered – for example “born on or after 2048/07/16 and on or before 2065/07/15” for an assistant-level post with an advertisement deadline of 2083/07/15. It is a quick way to check friends or siblings for the same advertisement.
Common mistakes
- Using the double-fee deadline or the exam date instead of the normal last date of application.
- Entering an AD birthday that doesn't match the BS date on the citizenship certificate.
- Thinking “35” means you can apply until 35 years 11 months.
- Forgetting that officer (gazetted) posts need 21 completed years, not 18 – a 20-year-old graduate cannot apply for Section Officer yet.
- Assuming the women's/disability limit of 40 applies in every service – check each advertisement.
Once you know you are eligible, prepare your papers with the document checklist, work out the fee with the application fee calculator, and start daily practice with weekly mock exams.
